Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have hit headlines recently after their 8-year-old daughter, Shiloh, headed down the red carpet with a short hair cut and dressed in a suit.
The Hollywood couple have revealed that their oldest child now wants to be addressed as “John,” sparking a debate on social media and among psychology experts.
In 2008, Pitt spoke with Oprah Winfrey about acting, his relationship with Jolie and what it’s like to be the parents of six children, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] reports. During the interview, the actor also told Winfrey a quick story about Shiloh.
“She only wants to be called John,” Pitt said. “John or Peter. So it’s a Peter Pan thing. So, we’ve got to call her John. ‘Shi, do you want —’ ‘John. I’m John.’ And then I’ll say, ‘John, would you like some orange juice?’ And she goes, ‘No!’”
In 2010, Jolie talked to Vanity Fair about John’s gender identity, which the 8-year-old’s family fully supports, according to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
“She wants to be a boy,” Jolie said. “So we had to cut her hair. She likes to wear boys’ everything. She thinks she’s one of the brothers.”
Clinical psychologist Linda Blair says it’s important for parents to not jump to conclusion when it comes to their child experimenting with gender identity.
“Usually with a child, especially children with older siblings of the opposite gender, it’s normal to want to copy them and be like them,” Blair told [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. “That’s quite a normal phase for a lot of kids.”
She adds: “To explore what it means to be both genders is also totally normal. But the problem is we have suppressed it for so many generations, that people are still uncomfortable with it. You can’t become what you are until you know what you’re not.” |

| I think if the child identifies with being a boy, then they are doing the right thing by letting her choose which lifestyle to live. She may be going through a phase but it seems that this phase is lasting a long time. I do like that they aren't treating her any different. I don't know how I would react in a situation like this and I am glad that I don't have to worry about it with my child. I would hope that I would be understanding. Especially after seeing what happened to that teen that recently committed suicide because of this very reason. |

| I'm also impressed with their acceptance. I don't think this is a "phase" she's been like that since she was 2 or 3. I think it's healthy for her, knowing whatever she decides when she's old enough to make that important decision (possible gender change?) her parents will be by her side through the whole thing. It would make it alot easier for her to do so, than if her parents didn't agree. Good for her though, there aren't alot of 8 year olds who will stand up fully for what they believe in, and be so open, especially when they're in the eye of the media. She's going to go far in life, and it won't be because of her mommy and daddy's bank accounts. She will be successful herself, in whatever she chooses to do! |

| I applaud them in their child's case she has felt this way for years... It can't be outside influenced as she has a twin sister and one of the most feminine women on this earth... She has sisters so its not a tom boy phase I don't think. After that one poor kid committed suicide after not getting acceptance and realizing that they could never complete the process of going through the change. My heart bleeds that we have to eat these people up and spit them out instead of LOVE LOVE LOVE. |
