It’s a topic that Glee star Naya Rivera brought up by way of controversy while guest-hosting The View this week: “I feel like showering more than once a day or every day is such a white people thing,” she said, to the surprise of her fellow hosts.

The actress, who is part Puerto-Rican, African-American, and German, later clarified her comment. “Yesterday, we were talking about a study that says you’re supposed to shower once or twice every three days. I had an opinion on it that was supposed to be a joke,” she said.

Kidding or not, the whole thing got us thinking: Is showering every day really necessary, for anyone?

“Daily showering is a more cultural phenomenon than medical necessity,” explains Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Hospital’s Department of Dermatology. “In the U.S., people commonly shower once or even more per day – this can actually be harmful to skin, as hot water strips essential oils and can lead to irritation,” he adds.

I do shower daily. I feel icky if I don't. Also, I work in an office with small cubicles. Very close quarters. I would not want to stink up the place.

Also.... I think it is a US thing, not so much a white people thing.

Do you shower daily? Yes, I hate feeling sticky, sweaty, or dirty. I do not wash my hair everyday cause it would kill my hair. But I wash my body everyday

Do you think it's healthy? Yes, the harsh soaps could dry out your skin but if your using a good moisturizer and applying it after shower yes you will be fine.

Do you think that this is a "white people thing"? Well since my kiddos are 50% Puerto Rican and shower daily no I do not think its a white people thing. However I think she did not mean anything racist or ignorant by it. It was one of those things where she spoke before she thought and people of course got their panties up in a bunch and caused a pathetic uproar.

It's a "I don't wanna be a dirty fucking bum" type thing. 

The 'white people' comment was stupid. I don't care if it was supposed to be a joke, it was kind of lame. 

There is nothing wrong with showering every day. It's about keeping yourself clean. Some people have hair or skin that gets greasy faster than others, and it's good to keep that washed. Also, your private bits should really be kept clean so you don't get an infection.
