Has anyone here adopted? If so, does your state continue to subsidize your child after the adoption is final?
My brother and sister in law could not have children. So, they fostered kids for about a year until they found one to adopt. At the time, they would receive a monthly stipen for the children's cost and free medical care. I was under the impression that once they adopted, it was their kid, and that would go away.
But it didn't. They adopted 4 children total, they receive monthly payments for them until they are 18, free medical care and I just found out free college tuition at a state school.
So, I'm curious, is this normal or just Ohio ?

I was a foster kid/Birthmom so I had many friends/acquaintances/foster parents who were/are/had adopted children and as far as I know it must just be an Ohio thing. No-one I've ever come into contact with has ever had a payment after the adoption was finalized unless there was a delay in their payments in the beginning of the fostering. My own foster mother waited 6 months i believe to receive a payment and when i finally left that home to go to my group home she was paid back pay.

I don't know how it goes for fostering. I do know someone who adopted two kids and they had it in the agreement that the state would provide their medical insurance until they turned 18, I have no clue if they received payments though. I don't know if that's for every case or because they specifically had it put in the adoption papers. I do know that if the child is special needs then the state will cover them regardless due to the disability act and to help them find loving homes sense people are less likely to adopt a special needs child.

I was just wondering. I'm happy that my brother has that extra support, however, at the same time, I do not understand it.
